Lumai Tackles Photonic’s Issues with Free Space Optics
Lumai, a spinout from the University of Oxford, is working on an optical matrix vector multiply accelerator that the company says can process AI inference four times as fast as today’s GPUs, with dramatic power and total cost of ownership savings. The accelerator uses free-space optics, not integrated silicon photonics. The startup recently won the Best Overall Technology award, including a $10,000 prize, at the Future Technologies Symposium 2024.
